THE REAL ALBERGO ALTO MATANNA​

The story of the Albergo and the hot air balloon, woven through Petra's Quest, is true and Daniele Barsi was, indeed, my grandfather's cousin. But as mentioned in Historical Notes at the back of the book, I adjusted the dates (slightly) to fit the story.

The inaugural flight took place on August 28, 1910 with international attention—including that from royalty. The service allowed guests to reach Alto Matanna from Viareggio, boarding in Casoli, in just under an hour.

I won't be spoiling any future readers' experience by telling you the story here. But, am including a few relevant photos.

The balloon—and its fate—is still remembered today. A presentation is being held May 16-17, 2026.
